DO – DOES – DID – DONE
The word DO appears a lot in English.
This is because it can be a verb, as in the verb TO DO which can be conjugated as Do and Does in the present tense, Did in the past tense and Done as a past participle.
DO can also be an AUXILIARY verb in the form of Do / Does to make questions in the present tense and Did to make questions in the past tense.
Let’s look at each one in more detail. We will start with the verb TO DO.
As we have seen, the verb TO DO has four forms: Do / Does / Did and Done
Lets look at its form in the simple present tense.
TO DO – Present Tense
With the verb TO DO in the Present Tense…
We say: I do / you do / we do / they do
But we say: he does / she does / it does
Let’s look at some example sentences:
- I do my laundry on Saturdays.
(Do my laundry means I wash my clothes, well, I put in the washing machine)
- They do their chores when they arrive home.
(Chores is the housework you need to do like washing the dishes, doing the vacuuming, etc.)
- He does nothing all day. (That’s right… he is quite lazy, he does absolutely nothing.)
- She does charity work when she has time. (People that do charity work are superheroes)
TO DO – Past Tense
The simple past tense of DO is DID for all subjects:
I did / you did / we did / they did / he did / she did / it did
Notice how there is only one form of the verb in the past tense…. DID.
- He did a magic trick. (Yes, and everyone was amazed… wooow!)
- The baby did a fart. (Yes, and the smell made everyone cry. How can such a cute thing produce something so rotten.)
- I did my homework in record time. (Yes, it only took me 5 hours instead of 10)
- She did ballet after school last year. (This year she is doing something different)
TO DO – Past Participle
The past participle of DO is DONE. Remember that past participles are accompanied by a conjugation of the verb TO HAVE or TO BE (which means it is in the correct tense according to the subject)
In general Have + past participle is used with a perfect tense and BE + past participle is with the passive voice.
Let’s look at some examples:
- I have done my homework.
- He has done a good job.
These two sentences are in the present perfect tense because they have have or has before the past participle done.
- The video will show you how it is done.
- The report was done on time.
Here we used a conjugation of the verb To Be before the past participle done.
TO DO – To replace a verb
We sometimes use the verb DO to replace a verb when the meaning is clear or obvious. This replacement is more common in informal spoken English:
- Have you done the dishes yet?
(Here done means washed)
- I’ll do the kitchen if you do the lawns
(The first do means clean – The second do means mow)
Sometimes Do, Does, and Did are used as auxiliaries to make questions in English.
Let’s start with DO and DOES:
DO / DOES – For Questions
To make a question in the simple present tense in English we normally put the auxiliary Do or Does at the beginning of the question before the subject.
After the subject is the verb in its base form which means the infinitive without TO at the beginning.
Look at this affirmative sentence:
- You speak English.
How can we make this a question? We add DO at the beginning so it becomes:
- Do you speak English?
You will see that we add DO at the beginning when the subject is I, you, we or they.
But look at this affirmative sentence:
- He speaks Arabic.
To make this a question we say:
- Does he speak Arabic?
You can see that we add DOES at the beginning when the subject is he, she or it.
Notice how the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question. That is because the verb is in the base form of the infinitive.
NOTE: We DON’T use Do or Does in questions that have the verb To Be or Modal Verbs (can, must, might, should etc.)
DID – For Questions
Let’s look at the auxiliary DID.
To make a question in the Simple Past Tense in English we normally put the auxiliary DID at the beginning of the question before the subject.
And just like in the present tense, After the subject is the verb in its base form which means the infinitive with TO at the beginning.
Look at this affirmative sentence:
- You lived in Spain.
How can we make this a question? We add DID at the beginning so it becomes:
- Did you live in Spain?
We use the verb form Live and NOT lived because the auxiliary DID show that the question is in the past tense.
Did is also used with He, She and It. So with this affirmative sentence:
- She lived in Japan.
To make it a question in the past tense we say:
- Did she live in Japan?
Again we use DID for questions in the past EXCEPT with To Be and Modal Verbs such as Can.
Compare these questions:
- Do you speak English?
- Did you speak English?
The only difference between a question in the present tense and the past tense is the first part… DO or DID.
And look at these two questions
- Does he speak Italian?
- Did he speak Italian?
The only difference between a question in the present tense and the past tense when it refers to third person (he, she, or it) is the first part… DOES or DID.
Auxiliary and Verb together
Look at this question:
- Do you do exercises every day?
Why are there two DOs in this question?
The first DO is necessary because we are making a question in the simple present tense.
The second DO is from the verb TO DO. You DO exercises.
What happens if instead of YOU we are asking about another person?
- Does she do exercises every day?
We use DOES because it is necessary for simple present tense questions for third person, in this case for SHE. Does she….?
Again DO appears because you DO exercises. It appears as DO and not DOES because the verb needs to be in the base form of the infinitive.
Of course in the past tense you would say:
- Did you do exercises yesterday?
Did is an auxiliary which is needed to make a question.
Do is from the verb To Do.
DO and DOES – For Emphasis
Sometimes Do / Does / Did are used in positive sentences to give special emphasis that what you say is true, despite what the other person thinks. Note that when speaking, the word (do/does/did) is stressed.
- I do want to go. (We put stress on the word DO to emphasize that we really want to go, even if you think it is not true.)
- I did study for the test. (Contrary to what you may believe… yes, I studied)
Notice that Did is used for positive sentences in the past tense and that the main verb is in its base form.
- Yes, he does like broccoli. (You may be surprised but yes, he likes broccoli)
- You do need tickets for the event. (I am emphasizing that fact that tickets ARE needed despite what you think.)
Summary Chart
I wanted to know if we can use did and wanted in the same sentence.For example in the following sentence:
What did he wanted to prove through the experiment?
Is this a correct sentence? It uses did and wanted together.

In English we can only have one tensed verb in a verb phrase. The auxiliary DO is always tensed. It is always either past tense or present tense.
If we use the auxiliary DO, the Complement verb phrase will always use a PLAIN form of the verb. This is the word you see in the dictionary.
- She didn’t WANT a chocolate.
Notice in the sentence above that because did is in the past tense, the verb want cannot be past tense. It is in the plain form. Notice also that the verb want is not present tense. The following sentence is ungrammatical:
- She didn’t wants a chocolate. (ungrammatical).
For these reasons the Original Poster’s example needs to use the verb want in the plain form:
What did he want to prove through the experiment?

When using a verb to do, you must use the plain form of verb after it. And the verb to do is sufficient to mark the tense.
What did he want to prove through the experiment? (did marks past tense).
But there is an exception for this rule. You can use do/did with a past tense form of verb in a cleft-sentence because the verb to do functions as a lexical verb, not as an auxiliary.
All he did was eat the food.

Declarative sentence in the simple past in English:
He wanted to prove something with his experiment.
Interrogative sentence in English:
Did he want to prove something with his experiment?
Interrogative pronouns follow the interrogative sentence rule:
What did he want to prove etc.
How did he want to prove etc.
Where did he want to prove
When did he want to prove etc.
The word did in the simple past and the words do/does [careful with the s in the third person] are the helping verbs used to make interrogative sentences in English. In the interrogative form, the subject and the verb are inverted.
Do you like tea?
Did you like the tea served at the party?
This is basic English grammar. And that is the proper terminology for explaining it in the simplest way.

You can simplify your question a lot: «Is ‘he did wanted’ correct?»
And the answer is «no». In English, when you use a modal verb, only the modal verb is inflected; the main verb remains as the bare infinitive.
So «He did want» instead of «He did wanted», and «He does want» instead of «He does wants».

“Shall” has a few different uses.
1) It can mean the same thing as “I will” — “I will tell you tomorrow”/”I shall tell you tomorrow”.
2) It can be used to talk about something that has to be done, or to tell people to do something. “Students shall write their names at the top of the page.”
3) It can be used in questions — to talk about something that could happen, or make a suggestion. “Shall I come back later?” could mean that you are asking someone if you should come back later or not, or that you are suggesting you could come back later if they want.
“Shall” is very common in the UK, but not at all in North America. In North America we would use “will”/”must”/”will” + “maybe”/”could” instead.

Ah… you are confused because the usage of “whom” and “I” are old school grammar book rules! Whereas “who” and “me” we use nowadays! So, in very OLD FORMAL English, the correct answers are 1.I, 3)I, 5)whom, 6)whom but in spoken English (which ignores a lot of the rules) we would use me, me, who, and who! Hope that helps!

Most of the people pronounce contracted forms of be, do and have forms wrongly. For “does” and “doesn’t” you forgot the pronoun “it.”
Example: ‘It ((the toaster)) doesn’t ususally work. It does sometimes work after I whack it a bit.’
I suggest a
dding the nonpersonal pronoun “it” to this lecture — as well as the use of non-pronoun subjects with “do,” “does,” etc.

“He likes her” is how we normally say that one person likes another.
“He DOES like her”, is ONLY to emphasize that he indeed does like her!
”She does not like him because he is very meaning her”…. This should say ….””She does not like him because he is very mean to her”.
It means that he is a bad person and not nice to her, so she does not like him!

Was/were is the past form of “to be” verb. I was here. We were at the park.
Did is the past form of do. We use for actions.,,,, I did my homework. I did the laundry.
Have/has is present, had is past tense. We use to show possession – I have 5 dogs. She has a headache.

I think it depends on how you learn – some people can just learn by listening, others need to see the words, others need a more physical learning environment. Everyone is different. When I learned Japanese I had to write down the words to remember how to say them….but I didn’t learn the grammar!

In the example “Does she have”, we have to change only the aux. verb do to reflect the noun…..We don’t have to change any other verb….We don’t say “Does she has”…..

Your question is not silly! It is a very good question as many people are confused with to be and do!
First of all do/does IS NOT part of “to be”! “To be” is only am, is, or are!
Basically, if you have an adjective in the sentence, you are going to use “to be” Ex… I am tired. Tired is an adjective so you cannot say I do tired!
I am hungry. She is thirsty. They are smart.
“Do” is an action verb, and we use it with a noun- “I do my homework”. Homework is a noun. You cannot say I am homework!!!
He does aerobics. She does the dishes, They do math.

Doesn’t = does ….they are the same. As well, haven’t ”have not,haven’t”,”did not,didn’t”. The only difference is that we use the shortened more and save the longer ones (have not) to make our point stronger.

Hi Ronnie! Here’s one very interesting question I guess! But I really need you to answer me, please!!!!! I noticed that Americans use “don’t” with it and he very often!!! in spoken English, even in the songs! For example: … and even forever don’t seem like long enough … or he don’t know what to do!!! Thus the question is: how often do you use it in your life and maybe you have some kinda rules in your spoken language when you can use it or not? 1. When should you use a simple present tense in a sentence?

What markers help to recognize Present Simple?
In almost all temporal forms of the English language, there are some kind of markers, by which it is almost unmistakably guessed what time to use in a given situation.
A simple indefinite tense has a whole list of clues. They can even be divided into several groups. The first includes those that indicate a specific moment of action (today, this afternoon, everyday). To the second we can include more extensive adverbs (often, usually, seldom, always). In addition, in the case of Present Simple, they are often used from time to time, occasionally and others.
However, do not forget that the same markers can indicate other times, so you should not be equal to them only. For example, always can stand for both Present Simple and Present Perfect. Compare: Adam is always late for the meetings — Adam is always late for the meetings.
My grandfather has always loved old movies with Odry Hepbern — My grandfather always loved old films with Audrey Hepbern.
Therefore, to accurately determine the times, you need to operate with all possible rules at the same time.
Simple tense education in English
Present Simple education usually does not raise any questions even for those who are just starting to study English.
To build an affirmative sentence, you only need the initial form of the verb and that’s it. The only thing you need to remember is that in the third person singular, the ending –s is added to it.
These rules also apply to irregular verbs, so you don’t have to memorize anything in addition to mastering Present Simple. I spend three hours to get from my apartment to office — I spend three hours to get from my apartment to the office.

If you want to make a negative or interrogative sentence in Present Simple, the auxiliary verb do comes in handy. In the third person singular, it takes on the ending –s (does), and for a semantic verb this ending is removed. In a negative clause, do / does comes second (or after the subject), and the negative particle not is added to it. It can merge with the verb in the letter — don’t or doesn’t.
I don’t visit my grandparents very often and I feel ashamed because of that — I don’t visit my grandparents too often, and I feel very ashamed because of that.
Irene doesn’t want to move to her boyfriend to USA because she doesn’t want to leave her old parents behind — Irene doesn’t want to move to her boyfriend in the USA because she doesn’t want to leave her elderly parents.
If the sentence contains modal verbs (can or must), then the auxiliary verb in Present Simple is not required. Moreover, even in the third person singular, these verbs retain their initial form, to which a negative particle is added:
Chris can’t come to dinner tonight. His boss asked him to stay at work longer and finish up the project — Chris cannot come to dinner today. His boss asked him to stay late and complete the project.
I mustn’t call him today though I want to. It’s only two days from our first date and I feel awkward that he didn’t call yet. Maybe he doesn’t it as much as I do — I shouldn’t call him today, although I really want to. It’s only been two days since our date, and I feel uncomfortable that he hasn’t called yet. Maybe he didn’t like it as much as I did.
Now let’s look at the construction of interrogative sentences. There should be no difficulties with them either. According to the rules, all English questions are built according to the same scheme, regardless of whether you use Present Simple or any other form.
If for the Russian language it is enough to emphasize the question intonationally, then in this case it all depends on the word order. The auxiliary verb in the right tense is always put in the first place, then the subject comes, and then the semantic verb.
In the case of Present Simple, the same do or does is used. If the question is general, then this is enough.
If special, then an interrogative word (what, when, how and others) should be in front of the auxiliary verb.
Separately, it should be said about interrogative sentences to the subject (who / what) — this is the only case when an auxiliary verb is not required during formation, and a semantic one is put after the interrogative word.

There is also a very common case when the auxiliary verb do / does is used in an affirmative sentence. In this case, it has no semantic meaning and is not translated separately.

The affirmative form of the simple present tense is formed very simply: after the subject there is a verb in the first form, while the auxiliary verb is not used.

Rules for building a question
